PTSD & Trauma Treatment in Lee’s Summit

happy mother daughter hugTrauma can affect the way you experience your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and the world around you. Sometimes the effects are easy to recognize, such as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, panic, irritability, or feeling constantly on edge. Other times, the signs can be less obvious.

You may feel emotionally numb or disconnected, have difficulty trusting others, struggle with sleep or concentration, or avoid people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened.

At Rejuvenate, our mental health professionals provide trauma-focused therapy based on your experiences, needs, readiness, and goals. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you reach out.

How Trauma Can Affect the Nervous System

After a traumatic experience, you may continue to feel as though you need to stay alert for danger. You might become overwhelmed easily, anticipate problems, or react strongly to reminders of the past.

Others experience something different. They may shut down, withdraw, feel emotionally numb, or have difficulty connecting with their thoughts and feelings. These responses are sometimes described as fight, flight, freeze, or fawn (fix).

Trauma therapy can provide a space to better understand these responses and develop strategies for managing difficult emotions and reactions. Depending on your circumstances, therapy may also involve gradually processing traumatic experiences at a pace that feels manageable for you.

An Individual Approach to Trauma Therapy

Trauma isn’t experienced the same way by everyone, so treatment shouldn’t follow a one-size-fits-all formula.

At Rejuvenate, your therapist will take the time to understand your history and what brings you to therapy. Treatment may focus on emotional regulation, traumatic memories, patterns of thinking or behavior, relationships, or ways of responding to stress.

Our team offers several therapeutic approaches that may be used as part of trauma or PTSD treatment.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy used to address distressing memories and experiences associated with trauma.

Rather than requiring you to repeatedly describe every detail of an experience, EMDR incorporates bilateral stimulation as part of a structured process for working with traumatic memories. The goal is to reduce the distress associated with those memories and help them feel less immediate or overwhelming.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an approach developed to address the effects of trauma, particularly in children and adolescents. Caregivers may also be involved when appropriate.

TF-CBT can include education about trauma responses, coping and emotional-regulation strategies, gradual processing of traumatic experiences, and exploration of thoughts or beliefs related to what happened.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

For some people, trauma is accompanied by intense emotions, difficulty tolerating distress, impulsive reactions, or relationship concerns.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches practical skills that may help with emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and communication. These strategies can also be useful when someone needs additional tools for managing difficult emotions while addressing trauma in therapy.

Moving Forward at Your Own Pace

Trauma therapy isn’t about erasing what happened or expecting you to simply “move on.” It’s about creating space to understand how past experiences may be affecting you now and finding ways to respond differently.

Your goals may include feeling more grounded, recognizing emotional triggers, reducing avoidance, strengthening relationships, or developing different ways to cope with stressful situations. What you work on, and how quickly you work on it, depends on you.

At Rejuvenate, our mental health professionals will meet you where you are and work with you at a pace that considers your individual circumstances and goals.
